Mara Karlin, PhD is a senior executive and national security leader with two decades of experience shaping geopolitics, managing enterprise risk, and leading complex organizations at the highest levels of the U.S. government.
She worked inside the Pentagon advising 6 secretaries of defense. The U.S. Senate confirmed her as assistant secretary of defense for strategy, plans, and capabilities. She led the 2022 National Defense Strategy, which informs the work of 3 million people and a defense budget of approximately $850 billion. She oversaw the Department of Defense’s relations with nearly 150 countries and shaped policy to major international events, including the post-9/11 global war on terror, numerous Middle East wars, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, among many others.
Currently a professor at Johns Hopkins University-School of Advanced International Studies, Karlin is a top scholar with two books on war and a recipient of the Secretary of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal.
